![]() The good news is that the developer has created a very easy to fly system, and while some may grumble that one cannot really do this flying thing without a joystick, there is more fun to be had by holding and tilting the iPad that one might imagine. In this game, you’re constrained to pitch and roll control to change altitude and direction by tilting the iPad (or iPhone). The clouds and a wing-tip vortex in a high speed bankĪs we found out with the F-Sim Space Shuttle Landing Simulator, input modes, especially a pseudo joystick can be very helpful. When it rains, you’ll see lightning and streaks of water. The rendering of the sky and clouds is simply, if I may use the word, awesome. The app supports nighttime, daylight, dusk and rain storm conditions, and they’ll be thrown at you randomly as you start each attempt. There’s very little control over the weather. Basically you have control over the throttle, speed brakes, gear and attitude/roll control. The navigation, in terms of finding the carrier, is rudimentary. The simulation, er, game, doesn’t much care if you overspeed with the gear down. There’s background music that has a nice beat, but you can mute the music separately. This game packs a lot of delirious fun for zero dollars, so you can try it before you fork over the big bucks. What more could you ask for? And there’s a US$0.99 version that’s ad-free. The Lite version is a free game (with ads). One might be tempted to wonder about the technical level and the respectability of the app. The instruments are good-looking but incomplete. One is using the tilt of the iPad, calibrated by the accelerometer, to fly the F/A-18 and not a joystick. Rather, one can just play a fun game with terrific visuals, pass some time - and the satisfaction of getting better in the game is palpable. As a result, one might, at first glance, be tempted to consider this a highly technical simulator. The Apple iPad is capable of some fabulous graphics. This game has great visuals and is easy to fly, but it’s not really a technical flight simulator. So it’s a great candidate for a game, both as a challenge and as a sobering introduction to the real thing. The same way you have to cycle your throttles to get the sim to match the same position as your actual throttle.Landing a jet fighter on an aircraft carrier is one of the hardest things humans do. Just remember that when you first launch the sim and get into the pit, you may need to cycle one or more of these just to get the sim to get them to work properly. The APU switch on your throttle can also be programmed to APU Control Sw (special) - ON/OFF in the sim and it will work properly. I programmed my autopilot engage/disengage button on the throttle to Wing Fold Control Handle - PULL/STOW so now when I want to fold/unfold my wings, I can simply hit the button to lock or unlock the wings and flip the switch switch to fold or unfold my wings instead of using the mouse inside the cockpit. I set my autopilot 3 position switch on my throttle where the up position is Wing Fold Control Handle - Fold/Hold and the rear position of the switch to be Wing Fold Control Handle - Spread/Hold. If it does not say "special for joystick" in the category box then you will need a 2 position switch to program that feature. In the sim, any action that has "special for joystick" listed in the category box to the right of it will read any 1 position switch as 2 functions (like on/off or extend/retract). One controls the landing gear and the other switch controls the tail hook. As for your landing gear, you can program any one of the 3 push buttons on your throttle to toggle the "G" key in the sim, or you can program the ENG OPER switches on your throttle where the forward position is for Landing Gear Control Handle Up and the down position to Landing Gear Control Handle Down. If you do this the 3 position flap switch on your throttle will work exactly as the 3 position switch in the jet. Program the DN position to Flap Switch - FULL/HALF in the sim. On your HOTAS Warthog throttle, program the UP flap position (on your physical throttle) to Flap Switch - AUTO/HALF in the sim. Make sure that you don't have any axis, switches or buttons that are programmed to 2 or more functions Im thinking of deleting all F18 files and letting it re install.įirst of all. Anyone else have, or have heard of similar issues. I have them binded with Warthog Hotas, same bindings I use on other modules. My devices cant operate gear or flaps at all. When taking off from carrier, I cant retract landing gear.
